Honestly, I'm perplexed. Women claim to be "smart" and many, many women I think would be very pleased at how challenging the program is. The degree is about as flexible as a 15 year old gymnast and you could *easily* land a well-paying job at any self-respecting company. Yet, brutally apparent my observations are flawed - as I look around at my university's class of "advanced discrete mathematics" there are approximately 100 males per every 5 females in the entire room.

Do any of you yahoo people have any insight on this puzzling mystery?

Women don't "claim" to be smart--we are smart. There aren't many women in computer science because MEN have, for thousands of years, deemed certain roles and careers "acceptable" for women. After such a long time of being in creative and nurturing roles and jobs, women aren't just going to jump into fields like computer science over night. There are, and will be, an increasing number of women in the field as time goes on.

I think you might benefit from taking some women's studies or sociology classes along side your computer science ones. Really, this question isn't hard to answer if you think about it.

I don't know where you live, but here in California there are more woman in the IT department than men. And to answer your question, it's proabably because majority of the woman have already gotten their degrees in IT and CS years ago like in 1997.

I have a Computer Science degree, and I noticed the same thing while I was taking major courses.

On average, men tend to fare better with quantitative curriculums.

Women tend to fare better with verbal curriculums.
