On a part time basis I sell bridal dresses and lingerie, and I am a male. I use the name Jodie in my communications because people seem comfortable talking with a woman about what are, at the end of the day, very feminine things. Anyway this came about because I found it put customers off if they knew me by my male name, don't know why, but it seemed that way to me. So I started using a feminine name and it seems to work. I am not misleading people I hope, because when they meet me they can see I am male. So is this okay? I actually use 'Jodee' because I think it is between 'Jody' (male) and 'Jodie' (female). anyway I think it is a pretty name and it is helping to grow business and people seem happy to deal with us. But is it okay to use another name, especially one so obviously feminine?

There's nothing wrong with using a girls name even though you're a boy. Here's even more names that can go either way:

Aaron - Erin
Terry - Terri
Jerry - Jerri
Joe - Jo
Jacky - Jackie
Tony - Toni
Kelly - Kelli

And there's even more, so don't even worry yourself.

Well, there is a time and place. Someone might have a problem and consult some legal authority. In a community near me a police officer was arrested for portraying himself as a female and obtaining credit and buying stuff. To some people identity is a very important thing. Maybe you need to have a chat with a lawyer about where the lines (and landmines) are--there is potential for problems in some jurisdictions that are different from others.

Anything that works is OK. I've certainly heard the name Jody for a man. (It's the ending with an "i" or an "ie" that gives the impression the bearer of the name is female.)

anyway seeing as your name is jodee/jodi,whatever you can spell it many different ways and i don't see a problem with it.
do you sound like a girl?lol
sorry.but if people get catty cause you are a guy with a unisex name then it is their problem not yours.

'Jody' sounds like Judy from Dudley in the West Midlands.

Oh, that's good. I like the way you've planed it out, Jodie and Jody.

Keep doing it if you want to.

One of my co-workers used just her initials in correspondence, and everyone assumed she was a guy. In her particular job, she'd never have had the same credibility if it was known that "he" was a "she". I don't see anything wrong in deliberately using a sexually ambiguous name, especially in sales, where marketing and image are everything.

Why not? When I did collections years ago, we were told to use fake names while calling people. Plus writers use fake names all the time. If you are comfortable with it and your managers are fine with it, then go with it.
