Blame it on the resin in the trees. The resin in a LIVE tree flows freely. When the tree catches fire, the tree bursts! into a lot of burning and hot pieces, especially pine trees, which then spread to even MORE trees. AND the fire is burning UPward, so it has more time to get hotter, burn faster.

heres the thing. You tend to want the fire started immediately when your camping and want to warm up at home. but in a forest when no one is watching and have an agenda the fire or amber from a discarded cigarette have time to catch on that dry foliage around the area , thus creating a larger base of fire. If you piled dry grass and leaves in a central location than struck a match and placed it on that pile i guarantee you will have a fire in some time..

People take much more precautions with campfires, they are usually away from flammable vegetation and surrounded with rocks to prevent spreading. A cigarette or a match is usually carelessly thrown anywhere, that includes dry grass, leaves, fallen branches, where it is highly likely to start a fire.

One person will have trouble starting a fire. A thousand idiots in a dry forest where they can drop lighted matches or cigarettes on to tinder dry grass starts a chain reaction and you have a forest fire.

your need for fire is relative. if you are trying to roast marshmallows for the kids or trying to dry out your sleeping bag the fire will not start. if it is the middle of august and the forest is dry, a spark will destroy two communities and an industry as well as scorch thousands of square kilometres of forest. look at barrier, british columbia 2003.

'Only YOU can prevent forest fires'--Smokey the Bear (back when EVERYBODY smoked)
They make it difficult to light fireplaces, so we don't burn our homes down.
Camp fires are normally in the forest...but away from all the trees and other highly flammable things.
