1.. Don't look directly up at the plug when you remove it. (lol)
2.. Have the drain pan directly under the plug (BEFORE) to remove the plug.
3.. The oil filter will still have oil in it when you remove it.
Be ready to catch this oil.
4.. Lubricate the seal ring of the new oil filter
before installing it.
5.. Waist a 1/4 bottle of new Oil to flush the old oil
out before replacing the plug.
** REMEMBER TO REPLACE THE PLUG **
6.. Check the Dipstick between every Quart of oil. and
more then that when you see oil on the stick. give the
oil time to get to the bottom of the engine between filing
and checking.
Go slow and carefully the first time. Remember just because
you're paranoid DOESN'T mean the world ISN'T out to get you.

If you watched him a few times, you probably know everything you need to know. And if you have a lift, it sounds like you are set. Just a reminder, be extra careful lifting the car, use the safety stops, keep your hands clean so as not to slip and skin the knuckles. Wear eye protection. That used oil really burns the eyeballs. Crank the engine and look under the car for leaks before driving off. Double check the oil level when you are finished. Be sure you have the right tools before you start such as wrench for the oil plug and oil filter wrench and shop towels and pan to catch the oil and some oil soak or cat litter for what you spill.

Unless you're driving a Maserati or some other exotic vehicle, take it to the local "quicky lube" place.
Changing the oil is a dirty, thankless, knuckle-skinning job and when you're all done you have to properly dispose of the used oil. Just getting the old filter off is reason enough not to do it yourself. For the most part, engines are designed so you really need to put the car on a lift to access the filter and even then you may need rubber arms and a special wrench to get it off.
I used to do my own oil changes, but finally realized I have better things to do with my time.

It's admirable that you want to do that yourself, but it is cheap enough at many of the chain oil change/lube shops that its almost not worth it. A shop will change your oil, replace the filter, lube your vehicle, and dispose of the old oil. To me, its easier, faster, and a lot cleaner to let them do it.

don't forget to smear a little oil on the filter's rubber gasket. And only go 1/4 turn past hand tight.

Get a big pan ready to drain all the oil and be patient.

If you know what you're doing, go 4 it. If my husband doesn't do it, I take mine to where they do it. It's quick and really not that expensive.
