My 3 week old sleeps so peacefully during the day time. however, at night she is awake every hour or awake for several hours at a time...Usually accompanied by grunts and other harmless noises. She seems to sleep better when it is light and noisy. Could the dark be the problem or the lack of noises at night? Would really like to get her into a more "normal" routine. How do we go about this?

I don't think babies can tell the difference between day and night. How often is baby asleep during the day and at night? My son is three months old now, and if memory serves me right, he slept well when he did any time of the day. He would wake up every two hours or so to eat, then go back to sleep. Once in a while I had to help him to sleep by rocking him, but for the most part he went out by himself if he was full enough. As far as the "normal" routine goes, i don't think there is such a thing with new babies really. You just have to go by what ever it is they want and when they want it right now. How often are you feeding her? And how much? Once you get used to the feedings it should get better with the sleeping. Or lack of it (in your case). Anyhow, good luck and congratulations on baby girl.

Yes they can. I would try to keep her awake a bit more during the daytime. I know its nice to have those long naps! But little babies will wake at night. They get hungry. My son woke every couple hours. I kept him in bed with me and would give him a boobie and he'd nurse and go right back to sleep. I actually got some decent sleep when he was small. Another reason to breastfeed.

Alot of newborns have this problem...including mine. Everything I have read and heard says when it is time for bed to turn off all the lights and tv and music dont talk (sounds mean I know) to them all night. Mine figured it out after a few weeks.

Don't let your baby sleep during the day, and she will sleep at night. My aunts and mother used to do the same thing with my cousins and me.
