It will all drop down but cannot find where to disconnect the shift rod. It sure looks simple, but can not solve the problem. The manual does not show this part. Please help.

Shift to reverse. May need to move the propeller to engage the gear.
Remove the propeller, if you want. (I do).
Remove shift rod retaining screw or clip. Located inside close to shift cables.
May have to remove the starter on some models.
Mark Trim Tab position and remove. May be two bolts, one center and one on the outer edge. May be another bolt under the trim tab when removed.
Remove the Screws/Bolts that hold to the upper housing 2 each side.
Drop it, may need to tap around with a rubber or neoprene hammer.
Be careful not to damage the shift rod.
Place in a vise with a towel to protect if you wish.

If you stated the horsepower i could tell you exactly, but there is a screw at the top of the shift shaft that must be removed. It is under the cowling in front of the powerhead down low under the carbs. Follow the shift mechanism from the shift cable over till you see it. It usually requires a 3/8 universal socket on a long extension to get.

there should be a bolt at the bottom of the powerhead that will release your shift rod, follow the linkage at the motor untill it reaches the bottom of your upper section you should see it, although sometimes hard to reach

good luck

check behind the started motor for the linkage connection (you may need to remove the starter 3 bolts)
