There was a lot of movement of the trenches in the first world war. As was stated early the britts did have a lot of drainage problems, but the main issue later was that they buried the dead behind there lines, and as they retreated under the German advance they were forced to dig trenches through the graves of fallen comrades. Which was not good at all for moral or for hygiene. So disease became a big problem. Also all the damp and wet caused trench foot. The conditions and moral was so bad that lots of soldiers began shooting themselves in the foot or hand in order to be sent home as wounded.

France and Germany were good at it and they were brutal towards one another. Each side deplored horrible acts in the way of military tactics to justify winnig results. The Germans famous for the flame thrower a backpack canister type weapon that had a napalm like substance that burned at very high temperatures when lit. So they would get over the front line into the frenchies trench and hit them withe flame thrower sometimes at the rate of up to 25 to 30 feet. Let say it was the wronge way to go. The french were relentless in their Sniping and shelling the hell out of the them. Life in the trench was hard.

The Brits were down hill from the huns. So the water from the rain and snow all ran down into their trenches . The Germans were nicely dry.
There were 10,000 miles of trenches. Enough to encircle the globe.
Trench warfare is now considered a guaranteed stalemate.

Trench war used to be a protracted stalemate. Nonetheless, close the end of the battle, the Germans (and later the americans/British) developed "infiltrator" strategies to obtain floor earlier than amazing tanks would come around. Small, elite squads would flank and ruin the enemy trench setup, allowing for reinforcements to eliminate the now-startled opposition.
