In the days before there were plug in appliances that toasted
bread, people toasted bread in a hot skillet. And that's
where they made toasted sandwiches.
It is from this origin that we get the term 'toasted cheese' sandwich.
So to make one the original way,in a skillet, not a toaster...
Let the cheese get to room temperature (this way it will
melt).
Then, spread butter on one side of each piece of bread.
Place one slice of bread in the hot skillet with the butter side up.
Then when it is lightly toasted, turn it over. Place the cheese on it. Then put the other piece of bread on it, un-buttered side next to the cheese.
The buttered side will be the side getting toasted.
Turn the sandwich over and let it 'toast'. When both sides are brown to your liking, remove it.
The cheese should be melted and the buttered bread should
be golden brown.
Hot and ready to enjoy.
If you mess with a toaster, if the cheese melts and falls to
the bottom you will have a mess.

In a heavy based frying pan (skillet) heat a large knob of butter until it is bubbling and smells good. Lay two slices of bread in the pan and top with cheese. Season and top with the remaining slices of bread. Set the pan on a gentle medium heat and cook until the cheese starts to melt. Remove the sandwiches from the pan. Add a little more butter and place the sandwiches back in the pan, uncooked side down. Continue cooking until the cheese is bubbling and the aroma is irresistible.

i put some butter on 2 slices of bread, and put it in a frying pan with a slice of cheddar cheese in between. I like the outside to be brown and crunchy, and the cheese to be completely melted.
I've also made it in the oven, just toasting and melting the cheese instead of having the buttery taste. The oven method is probably healthier, but to me it doesnt taste as good.

Warm a heavy skillet...coat the bottom with butter. Place a piece of bread in the skillet, a slice of cheese on top of that, a slice of tomato on top, salt & pepper, add as little parsley...top with another piece of bread. Let the bottom one toast and then flip the sandwich over. Ummmmmm good.

toasted or grilled? ?
to make a grilled cheese sandwich, you should heat a skillet, get 2 pieces of white bread and butter them on the outside part of the sandwich, put 2 slices of american cheese in the middle and put it in the skillet. cook it and flip it until it is the way you like it.

Seriously? Well you take 2 pieces of bread and put a slice of cheese in the middle and then you toast it in the oven or a toaster oven or on the stove in a pan. Wa-La

I assume that's the same as Grilled Cheese.
I take 2 slices of white bread. Spread a thin layer of margarine on one side of each. Put them, butter side down on a frying pan on medium high heat. Put a piece of Land O Lakes American Cheese on each piece. When it starts to melt put the two together and brown each side a little longer.
Put on a plate, cut it in half and eat it with Tomato soup. YUMM

I get some chunks of the cheddar cheese cube on my bread and make it in the george foreman, BUT I also put a little pat of butter in my sauce pan. bread cheese bread-always real cheddar- when it gets done spread some more butter, flip and do not flatten. I only eat wheat bread too so it has a lot of flavor.
