Actually, sand was named in honor of Eduardo Sandovar, a Spanish fellow who built a boat in 1434 on a beach in Spain. Captain Sandovar reasoned rightly that it would take a large boat to get to the rumored "new world" but did not reckon with the fact that the beach dirt would keep him from launching his boat because of its mass. Eduardo became the laughingstock of his little town and beach dirt came to be called Sandovar's Nemesis. With the passage of time nemesis was dropped and sandovar was shortened to just plain sand.
And now you know the rest of the story.
