The Inferno is just the last part of a trilogy that goes under the name the Divine Comedy. The first two parts are the Paradiso and the Purgatorio. The title for the trilogy was applied by other people, not by Dante, and it carried different connotations then than it does now. "Commedia" referred to books or (more often) plays, that showed the irony of life, the ways the gods toyed with people - they weren't really designed to make people laugh.

The Inferno is the first part of The Divine Comedy. Then comes purgatory and finally paradise. The three of them together make up The Divine Comedy.

It's not a comedy like a comedy is today. It's similar to the fact that some of Shakespeare's works are comedies. If it's not a tragedy basically it's a comedy which is why it's The Divine Comedy. (Good book by the way)

I always thought that the reason people called it 'divine' was because of the subject matter. Dante gives his vision of how God passes judgement.
I second what others have said that "comedy" does not mean "funny".

that's "divine" because of the fact it is composed of God and non secular ideals and studies. For the "comedy" definition, visit Wikipedia. com and form in "comedy". quickly, a comedy depicts struggles/conflicts that come to a satisfied end, and while you're religious, stay a Godly life, and have faith in an afterlife (heaven) which will reward you, then all your struggles will come to a satisfied end.
