If a democrat is elected to president? Will that mean there will be tranquility in the United States, will we all be one big happy family?.....It's only logical that if a democrat were to be elected, all the democrats will be happy with their leadership and will and will have nothing more to complain about........, at the same time, since the republicans have a deep rooted belief that to question the president of the United States is unpatriotic and treasonous, they won't complain either........

Of course not. One person cannot do much. It's groups of people or us united that can make a difference. We all have to pony up and do something. This whole notion we have of individualism is really incomplete but it's the individual within a group that matters. We have to take charge and not leave it up to someone else. We cannot push our responsibilities onto someone else. I believe the way we get people to take on their responsibilities is through education and opportunities. Apparently the mighty rich in the Republican party don't want that to happen because it would affect them negatively. They would have less bucks in the bank or so they think. They are fear mongers and greed is killing this country.
I hope a democrat wins. I hope it's Dennis Kucinich.

That's the greatest thing about this country: the right to criticize our leaders and hold them accountable on election day! If Dennis wins, don't think I'll be easy on him either.
No way. He can't do it alone. We must work together. Turn off the tv sets and do something for your country. If we all do something positive then let's see what happens.

We have lost in Iraq and we are continuing to lose. Nobody I know wants the U.S. to lose. But we are losing everyday and a lot more than it seems a lot of people realize. Greed is destroying us. That is the real terrorist.

So if a Dem is elected and you will have nothing to complain about, does that mean you approve of everything a Democrat does?

I don't know any Republicans who call it unpatriotic and treasonous to question a President. Do you think the Republicans back Bush on immigration? Spending?
No, they don't.

What is treasonous and unpatriotic is to hate a President so much, you hope for the United States to lose a war so the President has egg on his face. That's alot different than not agreeing with his policies.

No I doubt it.
Those who now call for lock-step obedience to The President will no doubt begin quoting Theodore Roosevelt if The Dems win.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

I sure hope that we will be more united under the next President, whether a Republican or a Democrat. I long for more unity. I hate the divisiveness. But so far I don't see anybody on the radar who will acccomplish it.

Here is the worst "division" that I see in the U.S. today. In "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995), it says:

"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

And, to borrow an excellent, though rhetorical, question from Prof. Alan Dershowitz, "CAN WE EVER come up with a neutral theory of judicial review, one that is not partisan and political and result-oriented?"

The U.S. hasn't been "united" since the pre-Revolutionary War days.
It is the one weakness of government FOR the people BY the people.
People and their wants and perceived needs are individually different. Thus, they can rarely agree, in the first place, on exactly what the government should and should not be doing.
I'm an American citizen, myself, and I love my country... but I think that this very weakness I have mentioned is also what makes us strong.
We mostly disagree, but we have the freedom to "agree to disagree" and still have our lives and still love our country.

Lord I hope so. Bush has this country so divided! It's not getting us anywhere to just fight all the time.

Personally I try to respect everyone's opinion, as long as it's educated :-)

No, we will be just as divided. A Democrat could find a cure for cancer and Republicans would still hate them.
