You're right -- there should be no label. In past times, nursing was often considered to be the job of women, so when men took up the profession, it came as a bit of a surprise to some when they had the services of a nurse who happened to be male. I can remember older people using the term "male nurse", just as they would say "female police officer" or "woman bus driver". It's just a carry-over from the days when people thought certain jobs pertained to one sex or the other. Yet, they would think nothing of having a doctor or teacher who is either male or female.

Only the ignorant still do that. I've been a nurse for forty years, and done everything a nurse can do as far as patient care, and only once have I had a patient express surprise that my skills are as good as any female nurse. I even served ten years in the Army as a corpsman and a nurse. I'm licensed as a Registered Nurse in New York, Virginia, Louisiana and Alaska.

There are more female nurses than male. Im in my college's nursing program and in my class of about eighty, there are only about 19 or so men.

That is a good question. My son is about to enter nursing school, and I have caught myself saying...."he is going to be a male nurse". Well, he is already a male.
We live in a stereotypical world.

LOL! Never thought about it. I work in a hospital and I can honestly say that I've said 'male nurse' before. Sorry! :(

Same reason they call blacks "African American"

If something's different, some want to put a label on it to disgtinguish it from the "norm". Stupid, huh?
