I must second what others have said.
There is little wrong with a normal life.
On average, few people achieve something extraordinary in their lifetimes.

What of the brilliant man who changed the world but in doing so had no time for family.

I know many ordinary people.
People who have held down average jobs to support a family.
They lead normal lives, they raise normal families.
Eric, these people are not doomed in any way, they ARE the exceptional people in our world.

Don't want an escape from a normal life, it is what will keep you grounded to the real world.
You can and will accomplish wonderful things in a conventional life.

You're only doomed to a normal life if you want to be doomed.
It's like people who can't say "no", or people who seem to thrive on a lot of drama in their life, when life doesn't need to have drama. You allow it, it'll happen. YOU have to set the perimiters and limits and goals. Society will judge, but it's only that: their judgement. It's not their life; it's yours. Now we do have obligations to society, and those obligations mean that we have to follow certain rules; those we really can't control. But you'll find that you have a whole lot more control over your life and where it takes you than you think you can have and still meet those obligations. Hobbies are kind of like what you're describing; people lead "normal" lives, and put their free time and effort into what their hearts really care about. Some just totally break out and pursure dreams. Relatively few just plain go insane. Life is what you make it....nothing more, nothing less. I'd rather try than to just give up or give in.
