Sorry dear S.C., S.T., B.C. categories of caste is by birth not by conversion. These castes even one cannot get by marriage. The children born to a mother who is covered under any of these categories but if their father doesn't belong to any of these category will not be covered under these. In other words, the caste of the children is based on the caste of the father & not the mother. This the legal position as far the caste categories are concerned.

One may be a Hindu by conversion. As such Hindu is not a religion ,it is a faith because there is no prophet of Hindu like all other religion. Thats why no formal ceremony of purification or expiration is required to effectuate the said conversion. There is difference between faith/religion and caste. the SC/ST.Dalit are also Hindu if they profess the Hinduism. There is no bar whatsoever to a person to be a SC/ST. A non SC/ST hindu may be converted into the SC/ST in due process. It is very common to the bengali society for getting extra constitutional benefit available to the SC/ST.
