Yesterday (Oct. 25) was St. Crispin's Day. I seem to recall that some important historical event happened on that day (possibly something recorded in a Shakespeare play) but I can't remember what it was. Any help?

You are right with your Shakespeare link.

There is a famous speech in Henry V called the St. Crispian's Day Speech which takes place before the Battle of Agincourt.

See the link below.

The "important" event was the Battle of Angencourt (sp?).

It pitted Henry V, the young English King against the Forces of France. Henry, as was the pattern in the 100 years war, was raiding in France and was on his way back to Calais and then to England.

A large french force caught him, and did battle in a narrow field; limiting the effectiveness of the larger French cavalry & knights. The English used long bows to decimate the ranks of the French foot soldiers; and were able to win the day.

King Henry V won a very important battle at Angincourt against a vastly superior French army (the longbows defeated the French knights); and Henry V gave a very good rallying speech to encourage and emboldened his small army.

I just looked it up; Henry V was , we think, written by Shakespeare in 1600; 205 years after that Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson used the best know phrase from the speech......"this band of brothers".....to describe his Captains; 200 years after Trafalgar fighting men still use the phrase because it so acutely reflects the bond of combat.

" for he who sheds his blood with me this day is my brother, no matter the manner of his birth....."
