They are not called "chickenhawks" because they love America. I think that Dick Cheney summed it up best when he said that Republicans "have other priorities".
Republicans are two busy making money off the war, to actually have time to do any actual fighting.
Yes, some do serve, but just take a look at the Republican leadership and their spokesmen. Almost to a man, they found a way to avoid service. And yes, some of the people are in Iraq because they want to defend their country, but the vast majority of soldiers are from lower income brackets and Democratic leaning.
And yes, all you Republicans out there who do not want to publically admit the truth - you can start giving giving me those thumbs down now.

My daughter is only 15 and in the Air Force ROTC program at her school.
She however prefers the Navy and plans to continue her participation in the ROTC program right through college with the hopes of joining the Navy as an officer.
I don't want her to leave home- ever (at least today, you know how teenagers can be- some days you want to be as far away from them as possible and other days you can look at them and still see the child like wonder in their eyes)
As a parent, it is exceptionally difficult to cut the umbilical cord especially when you know that cutting that cord could lead them into danger that you won't be able to protect them from.
The decision to allow your children to join the military or to decide to support their decision isn't really about your political leanings- it's more about a parents ability to let go.
I just hope when the time actually arrives for me to let my daughter go- I hope I can do so gracefully and be as supportive as possible.

It's a volunteer Military. Therefore the upper classes are never held accountable for their wars. That would change if all our children were vulnerable under the draft. Going to war would not be as easy as sending someone else' child to die. And the voting public would be very cautious about electing politicians bent on venturing into frivolous Wars and involvement in foreign folly.

You are basing a broad and inclusive argument about the stance of all conservatives in regards to military service on the experiences of two people in your family...
Wow, how enlightened.
Can you say, streeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch?

I believe that to be a limited view within your own family. As for mine I have three boys two of which have served in the military. One was discharged for a badly mangled leg from training and the other felt it was wrong for him to continue. I very much respect both of their decisions and I believe them all to be excellent citizens.

The conservatives nowadays are a far cry from those of the past. They are still willing to sacrifice lives for this country--as long as it's somebody elses son or daughter. They are too busy , like Jenna Bush, finding "other ways to serve."

My man and I have already decided that our boy children will serve in the military. It has nothing to do with supporting the war, it has to do with serving your country, and becoming a man.

Regardless of their politics, many conservatives are very good parents and want the best for their kids. I wouldn't want my kids to enlist either.

Who do liberals I know allow their children to grow up and drive big suv's?
In my own family I have a nephew who said he wanted to bicycle to and from the University that he attends, but his parents insisted on buying him a fossil fuel burning Ford SUV.
Oh and my brother leaves for basic in January.
