It's because of the Coriolis effect! Any fool knows that!

Don't shoot me, folks. I know what the Coriolis effect is and what it does (and doesn't do).

But seriously...tea? I haven't noticed a tendency for people to stir their tea one way or the other. If there IS a tendency, I would guess it has to do more with handedness and less with hemisphere. Just a guess, though.

That's just a bit presumptive and wholly inaccurate. Whoever told you that is just a wee-bit full of it.

The direction one stirs their tea, or anything else, is completely up to the person doing the stirring, and has nothing to do with which half of the planet they happen to be on at the time.

Because we like to stir in the same direction water goes down the drains and toilets!

I think that is more to do with being left or right handed rather than which hemisphere you live in. I don't think that the Coriolis (sp?) effect related to human hand movement - only water down the plughole!

IT HAS TO DO WITH THE EARTHS ROTATION. WE IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO EVERYTHING GOING CLOCKWISE AND STIR IN THAT DIRECTION ALSO.

is there a specific way we're supposed to stir our tea? i still counter clockwise, i'm right handed, it just feels more natural, but i'm sure i've probably gone the other way too.

They don't!!
It depends on whether they are right or left handed. Righties stir anticlockwise.
