I'm a student all BSU. While walking from a class I spotted a huge neon orange spider with striped legs. The abdomen was nickel sized with medium legs. I've lived in Indiana for 12 years and have never seen anything like this. I thought that it was an orb spider but the pictures I saw didn't look close enough. Any ideas?

I tried a search in Bug Guide http://bugguide.net and a few possibilities came up.
Marbled orb weaver (Araneus marmoreus), this one occurs in Indiana:

or the cross spider (Araneus diadematus), this one is an introduced species, native to Europe:

It's not easy to guess without a good photograph, but I hope this helps!

Most likely a common garden spider. Leg span can reach about 4 inches on a big one, and they are quite striking in appearance.

probably a mix of two spiders, new breeds are forming all the time.
