I have a guitar already (it's an acoustic), but it's really crappy, so I'm going to buy a new one sometime soon... I'm probably going to buy an acoustic-electric, but I was wondering: do you need an amp for an acoustic-electric, or can you play it without an amp? If I can find a good deal on an amp, I might buy one as well, but those things aren't cheap!

I enjoy my accoustic electric. You can play it with or without an amp. The best thing is that it will still sound like an acoustic with an amp, where my electric doesn't have the same crisp sound. I highly recomend the duo

Dude if you are freaking at the price of an amp you must not be looking for much in a guitar either.
I'm mostly an Axe grinder. I've have owned several different Gibson's and Fenders and a couple of Paul Reed Smith anniversaries that made me money.
For acoustic how much amp do you need? Spend $80 and get a plain no gimmicks amp big enough for any living room. double that and get chorus.
The best cheap buys I've seen have been in Pawn shops. New guitars from overseas that play sweet and have good electronics.
Spend a few bucks and get an applause made by Ovation, but I think a better playing guitar but too round for a fat guy.
If you want a good deal on a new guitar or amp get hold of Heart of Texas Music in Austin Texas. Look on line . They will ship and you can buy Fenders and Paul Reed Smith at 60% of retail. Good Fender amp deals too. No Credit except cards.
Stevie Ray Vaughn bought a lot there as well as other greats.
Good Luck and Good Playing.

You don't need an amp to play an acoustic-electric. It should sound just fine unplugged. Try them in the store until you find one you like.

NOTE: If you plug one into a regular guitar amp, it will sound really awful. They make special amps for acoustic-electric guitars that sound great (they;re a bit pricey, though), but plugging one into a normal guitar amp will not sound good at all. Plugging into a P.A. system will sound fine. The reason - normal guitar amps have a very narrow sonic range, and an acoustic guitar has a wider range. As such, by playing one through a normal guitar amp you will lose much of the sonic qualities that the acoustic guitar has.

If you can afford it, buy a special amp made for acoustic-electric guitars.

If you prefer electric guitars, I'd just go and get an electric - they're both tuned the same and played the same way. In fact, you may find an electric easier as a beginner because the 'action' (that's guitar geek for how high the strings are, and how hard you have to squeeze to get a note out) is often lower on an electric. On the other hand, acoustics are generally cheaper - which means if you decide guitar is not for you then you haven't spent so much money. One word of advice either way - obviously don't buy anything too expensive, but don't go for the cheapest option either. There are some really terrible-sounding cheapies out there which are also really uncomfortable to play and could easily put a beginner off when they'd be happy with a slightly more expensive but more comfortable model. In terms of electrics, there are some particularly good and reliable beginner-to-mid level models made by Peavey, Squier and Yamaha. I started with a Peavey Predator Plus and would recommend that to anyone starting out. Of course, that's just my opinion - maybe go into the shop and ask what they think, maybe get them to give you a few demonstrations of the different guitars on sale.

You can play without an amp but most guitars of that kind will sound flat. You def won't get the warm sound of the accoustic.
My advice to you is > buy a new accoustic and an electric with a quality amp (which is extremely important to produce a decent sound). IF you are on a tight budget, I suggest you go to a pawn shop. You will find high end guitars and amps at a fraction of their retail price.

You don't have to have an amp, unless you're going to use it as electric. But you can just play it as acoustic then when you want electric, just plug it into the amp. Hope that helps!

You can play it without an amp ; it will sound okay.
You could just buy a cheap practise amp for $100. The Fender Squier 10 watt amp sounds pretty good for that money.
The little Roland cube amps for about $250 are fantastic for the price.

you can play it without the amplifier. Why not buy a good Gretch acoustic and you can always add the electric pick up at a later time. Go to a music store and try out a few different ideas before you decide.

An acoustic electric sounds the same as an acoustic. It just has some electronics added so you can amplify it. If you do not need an amplifier, do not buy an amplifier. It just makes your guitar louder.
