I’m going to be traveling to Texas this year. I’m trying to find out what great souvenirs (food products or culturally/regionally products) that I should buy for folks here at home. I know that here in Washington, we are known for apples, salmon, etc. What is the state known for and what food items do you think I should consider picking up? Preferably items that don’t require refrigeration.

Chili and salsa. We're really big on anything Tex Mex, prepackaged tortilla soups are a good choice, annnnny sort of spicey salsa is probably your number one pick though.

Peanut brittle is another favorite. There is hoards of Mexican candy and sweets that you can only find in a place that is so heavily inhabited by Mexicans. I don't really know a lot of the names, but you can find them at many Mexican restaurants (the REAL Mexican restaurants, not Tex Mex) or Mexican grocers.

I lived in Dallas for 34 years and I never knew anybody that dressed up in cowboy gear. There were 2 guys in my HS that did and people made fun of them. I prefer to think of Texas as being a state that has high tech industries. The oil fields have pretty much run dry.

Bring back meat and produce? I wouldn't. As for ribs, Texas barbecue is known for BRISKET, not ribs. Let's see... there are plenty of hats, t-shirts, and clothing you could bring from Texas. In addition, bring back something from NASA, even if it is a mouse pad. Most every shopping mall in the area will have Texana gifts. I know, bring back an armadillo! (Stuffed, not live)
