I have been using an older ERP system which is full of problems. I am trying to get some insight to see if others in the professional enivornment are having the same troubles.

I know there is one ERP system I wish my company would use; I think the full name was Starta Development Inc. Anyways, I'm worried about switching cost and how persuade my colleagues to consider getting a customizable ERP system.

I have not worked with a ERP system that did not have some problems. To take a generic system and try to fit to a particular system is impossible. We are a smaller size company that has a system that is fine for accounting and inventory, but has zero labor reporting.
Changing systems is expensive and time consuming. No matter how good the conversion is, there will be problems.
I would start with a questionnaire that asks your colleagues what do they need in a system and how good the present system satisfies their needs. If it shows that you need a new system, take that lists and set priorities in a new system. Give that to the software companies and find out who gives you the most fits to your needs.

Hi,
This is a very interesting topic. When I searched the net, I found a few good articles on ERP. This might help you make a decision. Check this link:

Enterprise Resource Planning must be kept up-to-date, or the business dies. It's that simple. Of course, anything's better than the "FAHRT" and "BERP" systems. ;)

(yeah, go ahead and give me a negative rating for that awful and alleged joke!)
