Call the bank that the check was written from and verify it. Chances are you won't know if it's definitely legitimate until it has cleared through your account and has been in there for at least a few weeks.
That being said, never accept cashiers checks as payment as a private seller, demand cash or at least to go to the bank with them when they buy the check.

With so many high tech crooks out there today; there is no guarantees that a cashiers check is legitimate, you will have to wait until the cashier check clears your bank account. Ask your bank about how long it takes them to find out if the check ir real or not.

You have to check it. I suggest you do. I found errors for and against me. I saw businesses fall after I found error in there reciepts.
