The minimum wage for waiters/waitresses is much lower than minimum wage for people in industries that don't get tips. The tip should be an incentive for people to provide good service, but nowadays it's viewed as the server's right. I heard of a restaurant manager kicking a customer out because he didn't tip well.

Tip is every where but in America it has been formalized. The percentage of the bill amount should not be less than 10 % for the tip or be ready to be ridiculed by the server. Some call it a day light robbery.I think it is dehumanizing practice for the receiver and a nuisance for the tipper.

Don't some states still tax servers as well based on what they serve.

so if I serve $1000 worth of food, the IRS assumes I made $100 in tips and have to report it.

So some people tip because they don't want to IRS to screw over some poor single mother waitress.

Because it's a good gesture. They are trying to make a living like everyone else and tipping them just means they gave you good service. Unless you want to be remembered for not tipping and have your food spit on the next time you visit.

Tipping first became customary as a gesture of thanks for doing a job that no one else wanted to do. Now its just common practice for certain things. In the restaurant field, it is to suppliment the low wages. Federal minimum wage for a server is only $2.14.
