Considering Michael Schumacher is retired he is not the best racer.

Currently its hard to argue against Fernando Alonso. He is a two time world champ, and beat Michael Schumacher in his last year pretty consistently. He was also one point away from winning his third title this season. Had he won the last race in Brazil, it would have been three in a row... as it stands he tied for second in points.

And although Kimi Raikkonen just won the current world title, he still only has one and only after switching to Ferrari. He did have good results, but seemingly never could get past Schumacher and could not beat Alonso. Alonso was able to beat Schumacher, who many believe is one of the best drivers of all time. So its either the car, or Kimi finally got his act together. Although it is justice that Ferrari won the Constructors and Driver's titles after McClaren's cheating.

Serves them right. I'm glad Ferrari won and by beating the cheating McClaren team in the final race.

Anyway, the driver to look out for in the future is Alonso's teammate for the time being Lewis Hamilton. Only a rookie, he came within one point of winning the F1 title. So the drivers to watch next year are Alonso, Hamilton, and Raikkonen and to a lesser degree Felipe Massa, Raikkonen's teammate. Those are the only four drivers who have a legitimate shot at the title next year, unless another driver comes out of nowhere to contend, like Hamilton this past season.

Alonso has to be considered the best, according to his results, then followed by Hamilton and Raikkonen.

This answer is only for current drivers - you'd get a different answer for best F1 drivers of all time.

I must say that no other driver currently in Formula 1 can beat Kimi Raikkonen for sheer talent and determination. He's well balanced now not only physically but emotionally as well; he does not party so hard anymore or get very drunk or get a lap dance from some chick. He's also very independent and doesn't get intimidated by anyone. He should've also been world champion in 2005 if not for the faulty McLaren car.

Fernando Alonso is also good but he tends to get bossy and clearly cannot stand close competition from a teammate. Lewis Hamilton is probably better than Alonso but I'm still rather skeptical about him coz he's new. Even if he had won the championship I would still be skeptical. If you put Lewis in a Red Bull/Toro Rosso car and if he finishes as well as Sebastian Vettel did then I'll be impressed, coz let's not forget that the McLaren car could probably get a fantastic performance out of any F1 driver. And let's not forget that Nico Rosberg beat Lewis in... where was that, F3 or Formula BMW, I forgot.

As for the best F1 driver of all time... Michael Schumacher's seven world championships speak for itself, but if Ayrton Senna had not died early I believe he could have made Schumi run for his money.

Currently I would say Kimi Raikkonen is the best racer in F1. The McLaren he drove before he arrived at Ferrari had terrible reliability problems. He would have probably won the title in 2005 if the car had not let him down.

Best driver I've ever seen would have to be Michael Schumacher. He got the most out of any car he drove. If he needed to get a couple of super fast laps before a pit stop, he just went out there and did it. Plus he was a very technical driver and was an integral part of the team that won all of those championships.

I'm making my decisions based on drivers I have seen. I just came into Formula 1 about the time Senna was killed so I didn't get to see his career or those that came before him.

Currently? Fernando Alonso, Say what you will about his character off the track and i definatley dont agree with the things he has done but the man can drive a race car. You also cant help but think he helped bring reliability to a Mclaren team that had struggled the last few seasons just to finish a race nevermind trying to win one.

Best F1 racer all time. I think its a tie between Michael and Senna.

Kimi. He never gives up even when it seems impossible. When he was in McLaren before moving to Ferrari, the car had reliability issues but that didn't deter him from winning some races and driving amazingly well. He also doesn't ever blame the team if anything goes wrong and he's a team player. He also has a professional attitude.

Since you asked "who IS" that means you are talking about current drivers.

To be honest with you, all of the drivers in the sport are challenging and proficient enough to win races if they are given a good car.

But, to be more specific, I think Kimi has been peforming very well in his career from his controversial debut until now.

Mass also has potentials.

Night owl, this is FORMULA 1 not IRL. But anyways, I'd say the Schum makes it top on my list. But well since I can safely assume that you mean active drivers I'd say Kimi for sure, and finally now he has the crown to prove it. He has finally learn to be patient and mature and revised his driving skills to preserve the car.
