The Lion Brand website has a bunch of free patterns for scarves and everything else. They rate them as easy, beginner, intermediate and stuff like that.... you sould be able to find one you like in a level you are comfortable at. They have a picture of the finished project and step by step instructions that you can print or download to your computer. They also have a good "learn to knit" area with pictures too that can help too if you need to remember how to do a stitch
The patterns also suggest the type of yarn and size of needle to use, but experiment.... a scarf doesn't have to be the exact size of the pattern like a sweater needs to be... so if you like a certain yarn use it and most yarns have a suggested needle size on the package.

I don't think you need any website to knit a scarf as long as you know the basic stitches. Just knit every row using whatever yarn you like and the size needles suggested on the yarn. I like to improvise patterns, though. I hate making scarves. They are too boring.

check out knittinghelp.com - they have videos of all sorts of sts. The most basic way is stockinette st - which is knit one row purl one row repeating until the scarf is the length you want it....

Hope this helps!!!
