Your thesis statement is just a declarative sentence stating what you're going to try to prove in the rest of your paper. It is most often, but not necessarily, the last sentence in your first paragraph.

There have been many arguments concerning what invention of the Twentieth Century has had the most effect on the day to day lives of modern Americans. Obviously, medical discoveries have made lives longer and for the most part more comfortable. Modern farming methods have kept most Americans well fed, and there is no doubt that the automobile and the computer have had far reaching effects. However, the invention of television has had the greatest effect on the day to day lives of Americans to date.

The last sentence is the thesis sentence. The rest of the paper would be spent in proving it.
