Many of the people I went to high school with - waaaaaay back in the day had this fixation on Morrisey and The Smiths. I never understood it.. in fact, I thought he seemed like a self-obsessed attention whore who didn't really sing that well...

I'm one of those people I guess. I got into The Smiths big about 15 years ago. Then I heard Morrissey solo and I was hooked forever. He is one of the smartest song writers i've ever heard. He has this dark and clever humor that really touches me. I find his words and the tone he sings them in completely relatable in every way. His songs have been a soundtrack to my life for 15 years. I've never lessened in my obsession. Every day I listen to at least 2 of his albums..and they still sound just as new. I am 31 years old and still have posters of him in my basement. (and my kitchen)
I won't keep going on, you probably already think i'm nuts, but Morrissey and his music is pretty much what keeps me going!

Like lovnrockets I prefer Morrisey with The Smiths more and I believe Morrisey is a god to some (just like Bowie is a god to me ) because his music spoke to those fans and they adopted him as their idol.

I am from that same club with the big X. I never understood the obsession with the Mozzer either, although The Smiths were good. His solo material never did much for me.

I think he's/they are pretty amazing song writers, and the subject matter he/they dealt/deal with, any awkward - misfit - loner - lonely - goth kid... youth could relate to. but actually i found morrissey more amazing/settling in my late 20s... it's all about how you can relate to the music.. is it not?

For me, its always been the lyrics......yeah they're depressing, but their beautifully written. I'm a fan of both, but I'm not an uber fan obsessed with them.
