See if they have a SSL certificate, with Thawte or Network Solutions, etc.

First use Firefox as a web browser, download free here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
Then download the free Netcraft toolbar, (no spam, no spyware) it is an anti phishing toolbar that has a level meter letting you the security of a website:
http://toolbar.netcraft.com/
Then download McAfee's SiteAdvisor, another plug-in for Firefox, when you do searches websites are given either a green, yellow or red rating, people that have visited websites can also report if the site spams, spies, etc.

Bottom right of screen most internet sites will have a little yellow/gold key that will pop up and show as locked. Most sites that require a password will have this. It's a secure connection from your computer to their server.

Good Question.
I guess it would be how you got there.
Ex. I get alot of Ebay and Paypal phony emails sent.
something is wrong with your accout - blah blah blah
hit the login in button and fix.
I know these are fake because they will not email me asking for account info.
I would say if you find them and everything looks fair and good, it should be real.
If you get an email asking for account info, bank info, etc.
it is probable phony.

U can use several whois lookup tools
www.whois.org
www.dnsstuff.org
they'll display the user details of the website corresponding to the website!

you need to check the safety certificate and make sure its in date.
click on view and then click on security report. it should tell you when the certificate was issued, when it expires and who it was issued by and too.
