I don't know alot about cars....at all. My front end makes a really loud sound, my friends have joked saying it sounds like a plane taking off. It isn't the engine because I can still barely hear it changing gears and its not that. And, when I go around a left curve (never a right curve) the sound stops and my car is quiet like its supposed to be. Anyone have any ideas as to what this is and what I can do to get it fixed and/or what it may cost to get fixed? I can't afford right now to just go to a mechanic and have him tell me what it is, but if I had an idea of the cost I could save for that.

I drive a 2002 Dodge Neon , FWD automatic if that helps.

Well the problem is on the drivers side (left).

I would say wheel bearing is badly worn out.
Also the hub may be bad too - from the bad bearing.

Here is a look at the bearing:

And here is the bearing and the hub assembly:

Now your looking at about 1.5 hours of labor time to swap this out on your car.

Also a front end alignment would be a very good idea after it is repaired.
Usually the cause forthem going bad in the first place.

I had the exact same problem in my car last year. Wheel bearings, sounds like a plane and depends to where you turn, it stops making it, that's because the weight of the car goes from one side to the other one. That's where the wheel rotates, the center, fix it immediately. I had the same problem also in my bicycle years ago, and because the parts are broken and working by miracle (you are lucky you haven't had it), the parts lost their normal position and they go one on top of the other one and literally blocks the wheel without any warning (except te one you already have). The cost, should be around the $200.00, half for part, half for labor, wont take you more than 2 hours. If you call in advance to get you that part (make sure the mechanic check it) probably you can go again and wait for the car. But fix it as asap. Good for you on posting this question.

I think your right hand side engine mount must be worn out, thats why it vibrates while driving and when left turn the weight of th eengine is shifted to its left mount so no sound. Its not something expensive to get done, they change all the four mounts which holds the engine. its something like a hard rubber bush i guess.

It could have to do with the engine and transmission mountings that hold them to the body of the car. Look over the service bulletin titles below and see if any pertain to your problem and ask your dealer about the service bulletin
