And here on the other side of the pond, we use the word "apartment" instead of "flat." Women wear panties, not nickers. In fact one of my favorite phrases is "Don't get your panties in a tight wad."
So what's the question here? We Americans whipped your British arses not just once, but twice. The first time in our wonderful American Revolution--the one that gave us our FREEDOM, and then we did it again with the War of 1812. Wasn't that enough? Don't you think it's time you get over your animosity move on?
When I visited Great Britain I found the Bristish people to be warm and humorous--oh, by the way, are you aware that you people, in addition to not knowing how to speak, also don't know how to spell? Always throwing U's in where they don't belong.
FYI: A bonnet is a cap that a mama puts on her baby's head. A holiday is a special day representing a special event--like VJ Day, Victory over Japan day at the end of WWII, which we Americans, along with you Brits and a bunch of other allies, also won (had Hitler won we'd all be speaking German today--think on THAT for a little while). A vacation normally consists of a lot more time than just one day. The words monkey wrench can apply not only to a piece of equipment, but is also a phrase which means you're messing up something. Jelly and Jello are two completely different items in OUR culture--we have both (jelly--if it's Smuckers, it's got to be good!) and Jello--there's always room for it. I can't begin to address either football or soccer but I recognize them when I see them being played as we do have both of them in this country.
Who put a bee in your bonnet? Get over it already.

Yes, it does sound better to call soccer football...I mean it is a sport that you play with your foot.My husband is hispanic, and they call soccer "futbol", but different cultures for different folks, and thats just how it is!
I mean ....Is it a problem for you or something?
PPL now a days try to make something out of nothing!
As long as you know what soccer or football means from where you are from, and as long as you know what jello is, and as long as you know what a monkey wrench is, and as long as you know the difference between the hood on your head verses the hood where someone can live, and as long as you know what a vacation or holiday is, then please let me know what the hell your problem is!!
Don't you know by now that things are different everywhere?

Actually a lot of English use the term soccer to differentiate it from Rugby Football as those of us who had a proper education will know . Anyway stop knocking the Yanks it is the frogs we should be having a go at.

Actually, people all around the world have different words for everything and to them, it is right because those people grew up with that way of saying those words. So, technically, those terms are all correct, depending on where you are situated on the map. By the way, if Americans were to use those words that you recommended, they might confuse them with words that they already have. For example, in the USA, "football" refers to "American Football", "Jelly" refers to "Jam", and a "holiday" refers to an occasion such as Christmas, thanksgiving, etc.
In the case of the bonfire night, shared customs celebrated in different parts of the world tend to have different times of celebration. It's like thanksgiving. In Canada, they celebrate it before the US.
