a wet wall means where all the plumbing is in, it is a common industry term. Yes you can tile over it

In the uk wet wall is a laminate finished board, a similar product to a worktop but in a thinner format. No, you cannot tile onto it as the surface is not porous and therefore the tile adhesive will not grab and all your tiles will fall off!

You can tile over it, there is a product called Hardy backer board in the US. It is 1/4 " thick and can be nailed or screwed over existing wall board and is the right way to do this without worrying about the job going bad in the near future.

Ya but what is the wet wall made of.
Just cover the existing wall with a thin WonderBoard then tile over this. Better safe then sorry.

Not sure what you mean by wetwall. If it is some sort of sheet good or vinyl used inside of a shower to finish it, I would remove it. My local code calls for cement board as a substrate for tiled shower.

I'vge been in the trades a long time; and have installed multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and NEVER heard the term WET WALL as I want to assume you define it.

Steven Wolf

I had to come back; to see if it had been defined yet. I see it hasn't. Might you mean "GREEN BOARD"??? If so I'd tear it out.

you could score it and then pva it ..let it dry and re coat it so when you tile it the pva is still tacky...for those of you who don't know i think the lady means mermaid board or similar ..this is waterproof ply wood with a decorative finish ..IT works well instead of tiling as it has no grout to leak
