That hasn't always been my experience. I have come across numerous Americans who DO have a sound grasp of world geography and current affairs. If Americans are failing in this sense it is probably due to a lack of exposure as well as declining standards in the education system.

US television news is highly American. I watched a broadcast whilst I was staying in Albuquerque, and it was ultra New Mexico-centric. There wasn't even a mention of other parts of the country, let alone the world. I understand a lot of US news nextworks and newspapers are like this, spawning the joke:

" perform a magic trick: buy an American newspaper and make the rest of the world disappear. "

However, although Georgraphy is taught very well in most British schools, we have equally stupid people over here too. A reporter from London Tonight walked down an average London high street with a blank world map in his hand, and asked passers by to point to certain countries, America included. Lots of them were woefully off target, even for easily-identifiable nations such as Australia.

It was funny the You Tube video where they asked Americans in the street where countries were on a mis-labelled map.

Yeah, its pretty funny isnt it? It sort of adds to the joke that Americans arent aware there is a world outside of their borders.

Then again, I dare say Wayne Rooney is hardly a mastermind. Certain sportsmen for certain sports aren't bred and trained to be deep thinkers.

Dude, you sound like a moron. I counted at least 10 errors in your question, and you want to question the American education system?

not all americans are like that..there are americans like myself who do know geography...who know the names of countries, where they are and capitals and important landmarks...so dont think that "they"-meaning all americans-dont know anything about geography..

a lot of americans are lazy when it comes to school....cheating on tests, copying homework, doing just enough homework to get by with a passing grade...why learn geography? most of the geography that is taught in the U.S. is about the U.S.! learning the names of states and capitals is about all

people who say that americans know nothing about geography is like saying that the people on the continent of africa are all dirt poor, starving and dieing of aids....people think that way because of the media...thats all most of the media does is talk about negatives instead of positives...theres people in africa who arent dirt poor, starving and dieing from aids

I am sure they do teach geography, but what sort do they concentrate on.. Economic or climatic geography does not really recognise individual countries . border, towns etc. Political geography does. ...In UK we tend to concentrate on political geography... Names of countries, capital cities, main rivers and so on..

Oh boy... I've seen the Dutch tested on this on TV over and over again. They're no better at it than Americans.

If our President doesn't have to know where the countries are that he's attacking, why should the schoolkids? He sets a FINE example.

The better question is when are students going to start learning what they are exposed to.
