My Partner, aged 60, used to race bikes years ago, has just purchased a 1983 Suzuki GS 750E for £200. It wouldn't start but after being collected by a local firm it has just passed its MOT with a new battery incurring the only expense.
My question is, 'is it a good buy for him, or a goodbye from me?'

Goodbye from me meaning is it a waste of money or is he likely to injure himself?

Bottom line if he has a 750cc bike for £200 plus the cost of a battery then that now has a years MOT then it was a damn good buy.
I don't understand why at any point it should mean a good bye from you? He's a big boy and it's not for any one else to stand in the way of someone getting a bike !!!

Is it GS or GSX? I think 1983 should be the DOHC 16 valve motor with 16" front wheel. (GSX in Europe, GS in States)) Doesn't have the same collectability as SOHC Honda CB750 but its a much better bike. ( The DOHC Honda's were junk in my opinion) Excellent motor, about the same dimensions as the 1100 so its very understressed Sometimes had a few problems with generators/regulator/rectifier but overall definitely worth the money. It will outlast him by years if it has routine maintenance.

yes because in two years it will become a classic motorcycle and if it need a bit of t,l,c then thats the way it is but in two years time it will definitely be worth a hell of a lot more i had a kawasaki z650 from the early 70's and it cost 800 pounds was a rolling wreck i put a bit of love and hard work into a engine rebuild got the old girl on her wheels again running great cost an other 150 pounds sold it in 2005 for 7500 pounds so yes if you do a bit of hard work and put a little love into the project it can make great dividends

Not sure about motorcycles at all but I would take someone who does know somethign about them to check the bike over - but am sure that if a vehicle is over 25 years old you never have to pay road tax on it - so this might be an idea to consider too and as its passed its MOT then should be safe enough and if your partner is really keen if it needs any work done am sure he will enjoy tinkering about with it just as much as riding it. I would say go for it - it will prob make you both very happy!!!!

The GS750 is now regarded as a classic, so yes, £200 quid is a bargin ! The only thing he might have problems with is finding skinny tyres, since most bikes these days have wide low profile ones fitted. This website should be helpful : http://www.oldskoolsuzuki.info

If it runs, has passed its MOT and has only cost you a battery - yes it is a very good buy.

The GS was a great bike for its day. The question is, did you intend your partner to be a biker?

£200 for any decent bike that goes through an mot is worth it, but whats more important is if it makes him happy it' already priceless.

Def a good a buy. Go for it. Good bike then and reasonable now. Not overly fast or powerful, something he'll be used to.

Dead right about the road tax, I have to tax my 1978 Triumph, Good luck with the bike. Old bikers never die [they just smell that way]
