They were originally started out of the need to stop child labor. They are a bargaining board for workers to management.

The original purpose was to gain better wages for rail road workers in exchange for better and more dependable workers
and although labor unions may still be necessary in some areas, in others they are just a way of blackmailing a company into paying higher wages or the union will close the company down and providing job security for employees who other wise could and should be fired.
