A group of women in Cody, Wyoming tried to hurt my feelings once; at least they thought they were insulting me. I was walking down the sidewalk and there were about 10 women, all of whom were older rich women all standing in the middle of the sidewalk, taking up all the room. I couldn't get through them or around them so I politely said, "Excuse me. Can I get through here?" I went ahead and walked through the group, not being rude or pushy. When I got through one of them asked, "Are you from California?" They all laughed at me and I said no, "I'm from here. I'm Northern Arapaho so I am indigenous to these parts. If anything I belong here more than any of you rich hags!" Then I walked off feeling good about myself.

Words are hurtful no matter who says them. I think that maybe it would hurt worse coming from someone we care about and love, but then again some people might be more hurt if a stranger gave an offensive opinion. Everyone is different.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are always acutely aware of the attitudes of other members of the human family. We take in to consideration the eye contact, body language and gestures of even people we don't know.

Can we be affected by an opinion on the OP/Ed page? Sure.
Can we be in disagreement (even vehemently) with the radio talk show host.

I say YES, our feelings can be hurt by the opinions of people we don't know.

they always seem to yes. rudeness, seeking some understandin gor help from a service from somewhere then being rejected or insulted is upsetting. for example today, there was a man staking me, he follwed me everywhere, sat in from of my house in his car staring at me, when my husband came he would leve, then come back when he was gone, i spoke to my neigbour and she told me she noticed him other days too, i wasnt scared but when he called back i called the police. the woman on the ph was rude, told me i was overreacting, that he is doing nothig wrong and that it is me who is wrong. I was so upset i was crying, i locked all the doors and windows, i was suddenly scared and volnerable. I had called them for understanding and assistance, i was ridiculed, it hurt my feeling more than anything in a long time, she is a complete stranger, but it hurt more than you would think

I guess I can be kind of shocked upset, but it doesn't last for long because I know I don't give a cr@p about them. I think it has more to do with surprise and sudden negativity in my otherwise happy day.

I think it is possible if we are already insecure about something and a stranger points it out. For example, if a stranger and a friend giggle about your unusally large nose (example) and you are sensitive about it anyway, you can feel hurt.

I think most people fear rejection on any level. Whether it is someone we know or not, it still stings. I am more likely to get over a stranger's reaction than somebody I know faster however.

Has anyone cut you off on the road and then flipped the bird at you when you weren't at fault? There is a sense of injustice about it all.
