600 a month? It could be if your house was inexpensive.

I pay 8500 a year, in two payments.

Yes average taxes in a state can be $600. I would guess the average property taxes are probably in that range, maybe a few hundred more, in my state (NC).

I used to live in upstate NY and paid over $8000 per year (yes, I got the number of zeros correct, 8 thousand per year on a house valued at $250,000).

To another answerer -- Maine's taxes aren't nearly as high as upstate NY's. Maine has ~1.3 million people in population and has been over a million since ~1970.

I live in Tennessee and have a 1800 sq ft home and pay 600 dollars a year in taxes. They are very inexpensive here.

Maine's property taxes are outrageous. We have one of the most expensive governments of any state, yet we have under a million people. People in other states send their homelss here because of our extravagant social services. Yet everybody complains about taxes, taxes, taxes. When it comes time to cut them it's--oh, no! We can't cut taxes! What will happen to education? What will happen to my job!
