I think they generally mistake night time lights for the moon, a lot of nocturnal insects use it to navigate by keeping it to one side of them as they fly. It's why they fly round the lights, trying to keep it on the same side makes them go in a circle.

Because of the awesomeness of the TOTAL day just scares them too much. Think of Actors who want to win the Oscar .... but keep on making crappy movies.

because of all the birds during the day would eat them,,at night they only have to worry about bats,,,,,hell I don't know,lol
