If, in a 5 day cricket test match, the team battling first scores 600 runs all out, how many runs must the second team get in order to avoid a follow-on?

Would i be correct in saying 400 runs because the difference between the two team scores must be 200.

yeah... almost. they would need 401 to avoid the follow on, as the first team can enforce it with a 200 or more run lead.
