Depends on the country, and the position you have. I have worked for four days in a row, no one forced me ... it was necessary for the job to be done. However a normal worker in Greece by law cannot work more than 12hours, and it is necessary 8 hours interval between working periods.

Bugger the law if after 12 hours you are weary go home and if they don't like it they can find some other mug to do the job. Once you get to about 50 hours in a week make sure you get time off and/or enhanced payments. There is a law in UK giving a 48 hour maximum per week but it is so full of holes it is not worth the room on the statute book. The point here is that if you are in a manual job and using machinery there comes a point at which you are an accident waiting to happen. This is the reason for my comment about the law.

In the UK it is 16 hours in any one day - mainly from the H&S side of things. This is only permittable on condition you have signed a "voluntary opt out" from the working times directive. If you have not then the maximum is 48 hours in any working week. However some employers will not employ you if you do not sign "voluntarily". The other downside is that the employment law is heavily weighted in favour of the employer.
This part of employment law is severely grey - with some employers advising that the hours workrd is based on an average over 17 weeks - ask a solicitor and they will tell you that is total bullsh!t.
There is a required break of at least 8 hours between shifts - hence the 16 hours worked. This does not however relate to shift workers (whatever that means as we all work shifts), emergency services workers or reserved occupations. See what I mean about weighted.

Yes there is a maximum number of hours worked in a week, which is 48. This applies unles you have opted out of the Working times directive.
Another thing is by law there should be 11 hours BETWEEN consecutive shifts too.
Also when you have a day off, make sure that you have at least 24 hours off between the shifts.

Depends what shifts you work. If its a 4 day week then 12 maximum. If a 5 day week then less. Basically, unless you've signed to opt out of the European working rules then the maximum a company can make you work per WEEK is 48 hrs. ANy more than that and they are breaking the law unless you volunteer to work overtime. If you look at the ACAS website, it tells you how many hours you can work and how many hours break you must have between shifts legally. xx

24 That is all there is in one day. The only "law" is 13 days in a row, no more. It all depends on what is written into your agreement that they made you sign when you were highered. If you are union then they govern how many hours you work per day and the rules for overtime.

There is no cap unless you are a truck driver, train engineer, or airplane pilot. Other than that as much as you want. A friend of mine once worked 42 hours straight. He took a three hour nap in his car then went back to work. He said the overtime pay was great.
PS
This is in the US. I know in Europe the have a cap on all jobs.
