Last year we had trouble....we have kids roaming our streets (some of them older teens). Some stole our car on Halloween night last year (its a long story of how it happened). We do not want any of these kids coming to our door after 7:30pm. I'm thinking of parking our car (the big SUV) so that it blocks the gate to our front door. I know that we should lock the doors and turn off all the lights. Should I put a sign on the door like "We are not at home - please do not ring door bell".

Well, what about turning all your lights off, and do not put up any decorations. I know we don't go to dark houses.

Turning off all the lights is good enough. Kids and parents know not to go to dark houses. Where I'm from, it's actually considered illegal to put up signs that say you're not home because you're actually inviting burglars and intruders by doing so.

an idea take out your letter box both sides lock the door take out batteries in doorbell then when they come up the think you got burgled and cant knock on the door or when they touch the doorbell it gives them an electric shock and then you have a voice saying "trick or treaters go away, we don't have an candy today" i do it every Halloween we never buy candy but i always do what i put here except for the last bit

Anything you do that sends the message "I want you to just go and leave me alone"will likely invite reprisals and vandalism and heckling. Sad but true.

This takes some thought. You obviously have come up with nothing that works in 12 months, so I can't in 5 minutes. Sorry.

Put a HUGE dog dish in front of the gate with a bowl of water and a huge gnawed bone... not too many people will walk in where it appears a large dog lives.

Say "Sorry No Trick or Treaters Allowed"

If you are going to be in, try your best to make it look - and sound- as if you're not.
Going out and putting signs up trying to tell everybody "Nobody is in" doesn't work; it may put your home at risk from burglars.

I'd suggest just a simple sign saying 'No Trick-Or-treaters'
