Gel is not exactly meant to induce labor. It's intended to ripen the cervix, make it soft and pliable, so that it is favorable for induction. A true induction medication is pitocin, which is given through an IV drip.

Gel needs to stay in for a minimum of 4 hours, but most women have it in overnight and then either get another dose, or the induction is started if the cervix is ripe.

I had to be induce with my second, and needed gel. Went in with a long, closed cervix, woke up in the morning dilated to 3cm and 80% effaced.

Good luck!

I don't think the gel will actually make labor start like pitocin will. My midwife used the prostaglandin gel to ripen and soften my cervix while I was already in labor.

They might try the gel for a time, and see what happens over a period of hours, but if that doesn't do the trick, pitocin might be the only thing.

Here's hoping you go into labor naturally, though!

What is prostaglandin vaginal gel?
Prostaglandin vaginal gel is a medication used to induce (start) a natural labour. It is an artificial hormone; similar to the hormone your body produces to cause labour to start.

How does the gel work?
The gel softens the cervix and causes muscles of the womb to contract. Labour usually starts 6 to 12 hours after insertion of the gel. More than one dose may be necessary.

Are there any side effects?
Some women feel irritation in the vagina after gel insertion. Uncommon side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms, if they occur, are usually minor and quickly go away without problems.

Rarely, a woman may experience excessive contractions. If this happens, we will admit you to Labour and Delivery, where a specialist, or your family doctor, will supervise you closely.

i was induced that way with only 1 of my kids and id rather the gel any day, the Dr inserted it at 10 am and said that i had to just lay down for a bit, then i was allowed to move around freely, they usually use 2 doses but with my bub they only needed the 1 because what i thought were braxton hicks was actually labour and just 24 minutes after my first real contraction she was born, i truly hope you have a speedy labour and good luck,
PS, you might even go into labour naturally on your own and not even need inducing.

I had the cervadel gell cap inserted this mothers day when 42 weeks. A few hrs later baby was stress due to placenta problem they didnt detect and he was born c section.
They did tell me regarding the cap that normally if this didnt happen, they put it in for 24 hrs and it softens your cervix and helps to thin it out and hopefully you start to dilate and then they can break your water and go from there with some pitocin if needed.

i was induced with two of my four pregnancies, i didn't have the gel though, i had pitocin.
it makes the pains a little stronger, but does the job~so just be prepared for the pain, and your going to be all right.
