If you have another computer at home why not just install Linux on that alongside whatever is already on it. If you don't there are lots of cheap desktops on the internet you could check out.
Using Linux at work may not be a good idea because you are being paid to work.

Email yourself the stuff you would otherwise save to portable media. GMail offers gigabytes of storage space. So you can email your GNU/Linux efforts and pick them up from any other computer that has Internet access.

That idea requires a few things: (1) you must be allowed to use your work computer for things other than the job you're getting paid to do; (2) that computer must have Internet access; (3) you need to have another computer (preferably at home) that has Internet access so that you can retrieve your emails with the attachments you've added.

Assuming your IT people are not paranoid, you could always get permission (and maybe a bit of help) to set up a dual-boot on your machine. Run Linux when you don't have a windoze-specific need. That is what I did in the last job I was working at - and when I ran Windoze I used openoffice (I never did have M$ Office installed on my laptop), thunderbird, firefox, etc., and things went pretty well.

I distinctly remember a liveCD distro that allowed the user to set up a folder on the harddrive to save docs and configuration information. I don't recall which one it was, but I remember seeing it in one of the Linux mags I get.
