You didn't say how old you are, or if you were put off books by being forced to read heavy stuff at school. I hated school reading, but I did read a lot of sci-fi by intelligent writers (Asimov, Heinlen, etc), mainly fairly short books. Strange is right - get some advice from your local public library - I'm assuming you're fairly young, and there's an awful lot out there in the way of contemporary fiction that's not too hard to get into. Don't worry if you don't like book X, just go on to book Y. Best of luck!

What are you interested in? I can give you a list of "can't put down books" if I only knew what you liked. If you are into movies like "All the President's Men" or TV shows like "24" then read the series by Joel Rosenburg - the first of the series is "The Last Jihad" I read it in 2 days.

If you like "real" stories - check out "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini - it is about growing up in Afghanistan. They are in the process of making a movie out of this book.

If you are into thrillers - Dean Koontz is the way to go. You'll lose sleep at night.

Dan Brown is a fantastic author. Just remember that it is prodominately fiction.

You HAVE to read something that interests you, or you'll never finish the book.

Good Luck!!!

If your interested in reading and want to read.
Then what is your favourite movie type?
Do you like comedy, horror, thriller etc

If so, go to your library and look for a book. Read the blurb.
Or ask one of the staff to recommend a good book.

Start reading. Espically series, as you may become addicted as you want to know whats going to happen next.
Thats how i got into it.

That's what I can think of for now.

so what's stopping you?

quit trolling yahoo answers and read stuff.

don't forget magazines, newspapers, too.

find lists of the most important/favorite/best books ever written and work you're way through them. don't worry if you don't' understand something or don't like something. Reading is a cumulative effort and it will all pay off.

BTW, reading is the single more important thing you can do to be successful in life. I commend you.

Honestly, if you're seeking "culture"... I'd read the Harry Potter series of books to get you used to proper English.

Then I'd hit the library and read Dickens, Chaucer, Hugo, Tolstoy, and all the other "classics"
