Actually they are not 9, they are 13. Each one is different and known for something particular.

The Icelandic Santa's have changed a lot in the past few decades. They used to be bad and did some bad things and kids were supposed to be scared of them. A few decades ago their image was changed and they became nice and started giving something little to well behaved children every night (if you behave badly you only get an old potato).

Icelandic children put a Christmas shoe by their window before they go to sleep and for 13 nights before Christmas the Santa's come by, one by one, and leave something in the shoe for the child to find in the morning when they wake up.
