Well, it certainly wouldn't help.
The problem with that proposition is that Iraq tops what Americans view as the most important problem by wide margins, and with the Iraq War handily administered by the Republicans, they will receive most of the blame for it.
The news does look gloomy for Republicans, at least for 2008. According to a study conducted by Rasmussen Reports, Democrats are trusted more than Republicans on nine of ten key issues - including Iraq.
There are more registered Democrats in this election cycle than Republicans, and independents overwhelmingly disapprove with the state of the nation as it stands right now.
Lastly, the generic congressional ballot (also according to Rasmussen Reports) shows Democrats ahead by a 12 point margin.
I'm a conservative Republican, but the truth is the truth and facts are facts - it doesn't look good right now.
P.S. - Yes the Democrats will do everything they can to raise taxes, and every lesson of history has taught us that massive tax increases badly damage the economy. But hey, at least the IRS will have plenty of jobs!

The thing that is harmful to the democrats, are the democrats themselves. They have been consistently shooting themselves in the foot since they took control of congress. This is what lay ahead, but ten fold, if a democrat gets the white house. That and success in Iraq spells trouble for them.

The economy is dying its not getting better. You have to change whats harming things before it can recover. Right now its a oozeing wound slowly festering and running its course through a body and eventually after a long time it will die.

People don't vote on the basis of the US economy, they vote according to their own financial standing. If they are doing good, they vote for the status quo, it they are hurting financially, they vote for the opposition

A healthy economy usually favors the encumbent party. That is worth a lot of votes.

Yes, it probably will.
But as a democrat, which do you consider of greater importance?
1) America's prosperity
2) Winning an election
If you choose 2, please stop voting.
