This has been happening a lot lately around the country, and I can offer a unique perspective on it, though I doubt many would agree with me.
The only real answer to something like this is .... to ignore it.
I know that doesn't seem to make much sense, but hear me out. It's being done because it gets a reaction out of people when, in truth, it's harmless in that no one was actually hanging from the noose, and it wasn't even tied to the tree, indicating that no one intended to actually hang anyone. In that, it's just a symbol, and it is only as impactful as people allow it to be.
Case in point: I'm not gay, and homosexuality disgusts me. The 'rainbow,' in many incarnations, has become a symbol of homosexuality, and for a long time, I was disgusted anytime I saw a rainbow symbol. Then it kind of just hit me that it's just a symbol, a banner for a way of life, and it has no real meaning for me. In that, I learned to ignore it, and now I scarcely notice whenever someone is displaying one.
The power of the symbol is not in the person displaying it, but in how it is received by others. If you allow it to bother you, then the person who put it there has accomplished what they wanted, and they'll probably do it again and again as long as it keeps getting reactions. Worse yet is, they have a legal right to do it, because very few places have any laws that prevent it.
There are people in this world that are filled with hate, and there is nothing you are going to say or do to change that. They have a right to feel as they do, just as you and I have a right to feel as we do. The best you can hope for is that they find something better to do with their time.
EDIT FOR "LISA": Lisa, I hate to break it to you, honey, but dangling an empty noose in a tree is not a "hate crime," regardless of what motivated it. A "hate crime" is a crime that was motivated by bigotry. Dangling an empty noose in a tree is not a crime. It's tasteless and unkind, but legal. It's a form of symbolism, no different then wearing KKK robes, carrying a Nazi flag, wearing a "peace symbol" t-shirt, or putting a "rainbow" sticker on your car. It doesn't hurt anyone unless someone takes offense to it, which is exactly what the person who put it there hopes happens. The power of the symbol can only be defeated by the conviction of those it was intended to offend to rise above the fear and hate tactics. It's called "turning the other cheek," Lisa. It's called "being better than the ones who did it."

Ok so I am not american so I can only comment as an outsider but is someone leaving a noose in a tree a sign of racism against black people?
I miss the connection, why does it have to be black people?
If this was an attempt at a racist person who wanted to stir up trouble then they certainly succeeded... which is really sad.
You would hope that people would treat this sort of thing by ignoring it - you are not going to get rid of this sort of thing by over reacting because you will just make the people who did it think they have won.
Just a thought anyway.

That's terrible. Where I live, people aren't thinking their Halloween decorations through. They have been hanging effigies if Michael Vick in a tree. From the street it looks like a black person has been lynched.
Needless to say, cops made them take the "decoration" down that day.
To As Real As it Gets. Ignoring the problem became the catalyst of the civil rights movement. Just because no one was hurt physically in this hate crime, does not excuse it. People are killed everyday just because they are a particular way or race.
Hate crime is a BIG DEAL. Nothing about hate crime must ever be ignored. That's how people get killed.

This is very disturbing... How sad that you have to go to a school with some people that are hateful...
And now come and say racism is dead... It's very much alive... remember that "united we stand but divided we fall" Don't let incidents like this disturb the order and remember my African-American fellows that your Latina sister stands united next to you against hateful people like the perpetrator of this hateful act.

It's sad to think that people are still like this. We as a nation need to grow up and learn to get along. Everyone is the same, regardless of skin color and it's idiots like this who are slowing down progress. People who pull that kind of stuff are the ones who should be hanged.

They are just terrorists doing that. They won't be terrorists if their actions appear to be ignored. The whole point of terrorism is to interrupt the normal flow of life, and people like you are letting them. It should have been picked up and trashed just like any other piece of trash, but discretely reported to the police.
