I didn't know how to word the question. My son has a pc in his bedroom. I have one in the dining room. We have one modem so we have to continually unplug it & carry it back & forth between the rooms when one of us want to get on the internet. I also have a linyx router. It works but doesn't have any extras besides the plug in cord. I have extra ethernet cords but no instructions on how to or ways to use it.

Is there anyway I can set these pcs up so that we don't have to keep carrying the modem back & forth? Another modem is too expensive. But I get tired of having to go into his room when he's gone or asleep to get the modem & bring it back to mine so I can get on the internet.

A link or step by step of how to would be gratefully appreciated as well. Though I've had web access for almost 10 yrs. I've only recently had the courage to do much beyond download software.

Thanks to all & God bless!

I know I'm going to sound stupid pc guru but what cable connection? Currently I plug my modem into the dsl filter on my phone jack AND the blue USB cord which goes into my pc. When my son switches the modem to his son he plugs it into the dsl filter on the phone jack & the ethernet cable on his pc. The modem isn't wireless so it has to be plugged in too. The lynx router has a plug in & places to put other connectors in back. Is there some other router or cable I need to be able to keep the modem in the same place and be able to use either pc w/o moving the modem? Am I clearer now?

Well sounds like you have all you need to hookup the system.
Here is the pattern.

Modem----->Router----->Computers (up to 254)

You need an ethernet network cable from your sons room to the place where you want to put the router.

You need an ethernet cable from your machine to the router. (If all you have is USB on that one, buy an ethernet card and install it, you need a true network connection for it. You can use an ethernet to USB adapter cable but they aren't the best way. Add an ethernet card most machines today all ready have that.)

Hook the modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router.

Hook both computers to the LAN (local area ports) on the router.

That connects both machines at the same time without needing to move anything.

Just be sure the Lynx is a router and not just a switch!!! These are different devices. You will need to "login" to the Lynx ROUTER to setup the proper connection for your modem. There should be a "setup" guide with it. If not try the manufactures website. I am not that familiar with Lynx so can't tell you what the web address might be.

Here is a link to Linksys site for setting up a wired router.
All home routers are very similar (may use different local addresses for the network however)
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1169671597003&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=9700341299B03&displaypage=nodata#versiondetail
Just select Version 1 and View the quick install.

And God Bless you too!
Email me if I can help.

plug wireless router into modem with a 1 foot ethernet cable

think of a router as a coax cable splitter

now you can wire multiple computers to the router or if you buy a wireless router all pc's within 200 feet of it are online

you can buy a USB dongle for $7 from pricegrabber.com to make it wireless. just plug it into the usb jack on your pc

wireless routers are $20 from pricegrabber.com just get a G version
