I had a operation for a detatched retina years ago. The sight never improved. I can see color and shapes out of it but cannot read any thing from it.

Some insurance policies will pay you for the loss of an eye. You might be able to get partial disability from Social Security, but that's usually hard to do.

No.

My Dad had a detached retina too, and they couldn't save his sight. He is completely blind in that eye. Then the retina detached from the second eye, and we had an agonising 6 week wait, where for most of the time he could see little or nothing until we knew that the operation was reasonably successful.

His sight is worse than yours, and he is not entitled to disability or any other benefit. He manages, and he drives a car too.

You can get help from a dedicated staff member at the job centre to find a suitable job but the incapacity rules have tightened now, you basically have to be totally wheelchair bound, serious health like a heart condition or an amputee etc

They ask questions like "do you need lifting off the toilet" and similar, "can you climb more than 6 steps"

Best wishes to ya...

You can claim disability if your mobility is affected which yours could possibly be because you are blind in one eye - it is very hard to claim disability and the first claim usually gets refused and you have to appeal but it may be worth giving them a ring and asking for their advice.

If Gordon Brown can grow up to become Prime Minister with only one working eye then why should you be entitled to disability.

I think it would be outrageous to expect the taxpayer to give you money every week that should be given to people who really can't manage.

well i get DLA I'm on the very lowest rate. if i can get it for health problems when i have no difficulty seeing and i have all limbs in working order i don't see why you can't apply.
oh and before any1 says oh your bludging of the state etc i have a care worker come see me once a week so i don't end up back in mental hospital. its cheaper to treat me in the community than for long stretches of time in hospital.

Just because your blind in one eye doesnt mean that you can not get a job

Probably not as you can still legally drive with vision in one eye. DLA is more to do with physical mobility problems.

I'm almost certain that you can.
Phone your local benefits office and make an appointment and they will tell you everything that you would be entitled to.
