We have a 3406 Cat running a 450KVA generator and the cooling fan broke and destroyed the radiator. We're in a bit of a desperate situation and we know of a 3402 engine out in the bush that we're contemplating going after. What I'd like to know before we go all the way out there (7 hours drive) is will the radiator and fan off the 3402 fit, or can it be modified to fit? Belts are readily available.. Could someone please help?

When you go to check the 3402 engine, I would suggest you take your broken fan and especially the mounting bracket along with you. If your fan pulley mounts on the bracket of the 3402 or if the mounting brackets are similar on both machines, you should be doing fine. Else check the fan hub from your 3406 and see if it matches with the spindle on the 3402, then you can use the other fan. The only thing I would watch for is the direction of the air from the fan. On generators this is directed onto the radiator, while vehicle units blow the air from the radiator onto the engines. I would also pressure test the radiator for any leaks. Mostly we swap parts from similar series CATS, but I would suggest the above to preclude any chances of parts not fitting especially after a long run. The radiator can be adjusted on the genset while being mounted and should not be a cause for great concern. We do not seem to have the 3402 series here, otherwise I could have given you a specific answer.

Good luck.

I am not familiar with a 3402 CAT, except it is found in some heavy CAT buldozers.

As to the 3406 and it running at 450kVA, I would NOT want to put ANYTHING back in front of it that was NOT 100% correct. (unless your using the generator ro run you "PONG" game machine)

It is a serious machine and should have parts designed to keep it running in a serious manner.

You say you are in a desparate situation so I will take that to mean NO MONEY. Obviously you have a demand for the machine. If so, you need to balance that demand against jury rigging it to work on something less then ideal. Keep in mind too, after 7 hours of driving and digging this stuff out of a ragged out CAT buldozer, WHAT are your chances that the radiator will even be WORTH using?

To me, the time is more important than the money but if it IS the money, I would say-you are out of business.

Cat 3402? Do you mean 3204? If so, it is a much smaller engine and probably a much smaller radiator and fan.
