I am an atheist. I don't believe in god. But whenever I fill up a form(e.g- admission form of college etc.) I have to fill up the religion box as 'hindu' which don't like. As Freedom of religion is fundamental right guaranteed by the constitution of India, is there any legal process 2 become an atheist legally/officially.

Firstly being an atheism i.e. not believing in God itself is it a religion? What the Constitution of India Provides in Article 25 is Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion.

(1) Subject to public order, morality and health and to the other provisions of this Part, all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practice and propagate religion.
What is religion? A religion is a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people, often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.
In the words of Supreme Court of India the word “religion has not been define in the Constitution and it is a term which is hardly susceptible of any rigid definition. In an America case [Davis v.Benson,133 US at 342] it has been said that term religion to his Creator and to the obligations they impose ofreverence for His Being and character and of obedience to His will. It is often confounded with cults of form or worship of a particular etc, but is distinguishable from the latter; we do not think that the above definition can be regarded as either precise or adequate. Articles 25 and 26 of our Constitution are based for the most part upon article 44(2) of the Constitution of Eire and we have great doubt whether a definition of religion as given above could have been in the minds of faith with individuals or communities andit is not necessarily theist tic. There a are well known religions in India like Buddhism and Jainism which do not believe in god or in any Intelligent First Cause. A religion undoubtedly has its basis in a system of beliefs or doctrines which are regarded by those whoprofess that religion as conducive to their spiritual well being but it would not be correct to say that religion is nothing else but a doctrine or belief. A religion may not only lay down a code of ethical rules for its followers to accepts , it might prescribe rituals and obsevances, cermonies and modes of worship which are regarded as integral observances might extend even to matters of food and dress." Based on the above observations no where it is laid down that any group of people who do not believe in God cannot be equated as religion & provided the benefits of the Article 25 of the constitution. As correctly held by the Supreme Court in its observation the Religions like Buddhism & Jainism do not believe in god or in any Intelligent First Cause but still these are well recognized religions not only of India but the whole of World. Here the unfortunate thing is that all atheist living in India are not recognized in an organized group to help them being recognized as a Religion, nor they have code of ethical rules for its followers to accept, nor there any prescribed rituals, obsevances, cermonies and modes of worship which are regarded as integral observances might extend even to matters of food and dress which can bring them in the category of religion as we find in such religions as Buddhism & Jainism. Unless any such organized group of these people is formed to consider them as a religion & providing the benefits of this Article 25 of the constitution will not be possible. This request made by you to get an official or legal recognition as a religion cannot hold good as the law now stands.

Since you are in india I'm not too sure on the laws... but here in the states the whole thing about freedom of religion is that the government has nothing to do with it, which means you arent legally/officially anything. You dont "register" as a certain religion, because that in and of itself would violate freedom of religion. Cant you put n/a or leave it blank or something?

mate, u leave it blank, becuase u have no religion, or just put non apllicable or just write atheist.

u cannot become a atheist legally, because u dont have to be one legally, its just what u choose, so there is nothing to do, but just leave it blank or write atheist, dont pay people to make u a form, they're ripping u off.

Well I will suggest a solution which I found.I just asked God ,I have a problem. If U really exist can U show me who u are?Because I am so confused with the innumerable number ,the world shows.I got the answer from the Almighty Himself. Now i instead of asking people, ask Him directly. He will show u too if u ask Him.Because He told me whoever asks will recieve the answer from Him.People are confused because they dont ask this question to God but to the humans who themselves are confused.

Although technically atheism isn't a religion, it's fine to put it in that box.

Not sure why you're required to enter "hindu", would you care to explain?
